OC for an Older Cyclist

Someone posting on Twitter or Facebook or Instagram described our bike club as ‘white privileged geriatric roadies’. I would call this hate speech if I could just stop laughing.

The older I get the more obsolete I feel. I really don’t want disc brakes or electronic shifting on my bikes, but they are all the rage. And the E Bikes with electric motors which are flying out of bike shops seem far too newfangled for me to consider, even if my legs are getting to the point where they could use the help.

Apparently this ‘past my time’ syndrom applies to other areas of life too. Stoker and I were watching an older movie last night. So much older that our parents might have taken us to see it at a drive in theater.

Before the opening credits, the movie channel we were watching put up the ratings/warnings, and we saw something new to us: The OC! Outdated Cultural Depiction!

The movie we were watching wasn’t ‘Silver Streak’, but I have seen and enjoyed that film a few times over the years starting with a date night back in 1976 with a pre-Stoker love interest. Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor are very funny, and Jill Clayburgh is very sexy, if I am allowed to say that. Perhaps my blog should come with an OC itself.

Who knows what kind of label they are going to put on Blazing Saddles? If they decide to show it at all. And yet this movie, besides being dangerously funny, illustrates how absurd racism is. I saw it for the second time at UCD back in the 1978. Everyone in audience, of whatever ethnic background, laughed hard enough to pull a muscle.

If ‘Silver Streak’ is going to need an OC, pretty much everything is. Othello, Don Giovanni, Huck Finn. Even Bonfire of the Vanities or A Man in Full, which are both about race in America but not always politically correct.

And my blog too, at least where cycling is concerned. Or perhaps OCR: Obsolete Cycling Roadie.
