A Revelation…

Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six.”

I do not have the faintest idea what this means, but for some time I have heard the number 666 referred to as ‘The Number of the Beast’. I think the first time was when I read Robert Heinlein’s book of the same title back in 1979. Heinlein was one of my favorite authors and I still have a bunch his novels taking up space on my bookshelves. Books I read long ago and haven’t opened for decades, but I like having them around.

So on Christmas Day, with no gathering to attend per our stay at home order, I decided to have a little fun with my Garmin and my Excel Spreadsheet, saved with the file name ‘RichRides’.

A beastly number on steroids. That is my mileage total for the dismal year of 2020. Since I retired in 2007 I have always reached the 8,000 mile mark and one year I did 9,300, with 3,300 of those on the tandem with Stoker. Tandem miles either count double, or half, depending on who is keeping score. Whenever the CoMotion points uphill, I would say at least double.

But in 2019 I only cycled 7,180 miles, and as you can see I’m down even more this year. No trips, no club rides for 6 months, smoke, heat, plenty of excuses.

The total is only temporary. It looks like the sun is going to shine and the fog will stay away, so I’ll spend Boxing Day doing the club ride from Linden. Exorcising The Beast.
