A much saner 4th

Part of a cache of illegal fireworks police confiscated.

Just wanted to give a “job well done” to Stockton police for stopping rogue (and really annoying) pyrotechnicians.

On July 4th alone, cops “handled 33 calls for service, seized 346 pounds of illegal fireworks, made 13 misdemeanor arrests / citations,” and made a felony arrest of a guy named Humberto Paniagua, 30, seizing his garage-full (259 pounds) of illegal fireworks.

But the run-up to the 4th was even better. Hardly a day went by when the Fireworks Task Force didn’t bust scofflaws with huge ammo dumps of fireworks.

Some of these guys were just so blatant. Take this July 3rd call:

Illegal Fireworks (9:09 pm) 2400 Block of Pawnee Way, Bear Creek District

“Officers patrolling the area observed several illegal aerial fireworks being discharged. Glen Wilson 37, was contacted as he held a fireworks mortar tube (italics mine). Wilson was cited for possession of illegal fireworks.”

July 4th was still noisy. But in my part of town at least gone was the week-long mega-racket that clattered into the wee hours, re-traumatizing veterans, disturbing sleep and making dogs neurotic.  Nice job, SPD.
