The heroin-Trump connection

Sam Quinones

Sam Quinones, the award-winning author of “Dreamland” (and Record alum) sees a link between opiates and Trump.

“Nothing darkens your view of your present and future prospects quite as thoroughly as addiction to opiates (pills or heroin) in your family, on your street, or in your town. With opiates comes a fatalism and negativity that clouds a town or a family’s feeling about its world, even as unemployment falls and the economy improves.

“In theory, addiction knows no race. In reality, though, our national opiate scourge is almost entirely white. … Though this scourge has affected every region of the country, it is felt most intensely in rural, suburban – Heartland – areas of America where Donald Trump did extraordinarily well.”

Brilliant. Read the whole post here.

Sam’s the expert, but it seems to me that American medicine made a historic mistake by underestimating the addictive qualities of opiate painkillers. Now a way has to be found to detox rural and Rust Belt America — for the public health, as well as to prevent gloomy voters from electing a Mussolini.
