The grab-everything guys

The Central Valley Project at Fresno.

Big Ag is gathering signatures for a measure to seize high-speed rail’s money and use it for water.

But wait! there’s more!

“The measure would make substantial changes to state water law via a constitutional amendment, setting domestic water use and irrigation as the first- and second- highest priorities — ahead of environmental conservation,” reports the L.A. Times.

A critic scoffs further down in the story, “They couldn’t resist overreaching. They couldn’t resist the temptation to rewrite water laws to benefit corporate farmers who are going to underwrite the campaign.”

It’s called greed. Currently the state constitution says “the general welfare requires that the water resources of the State be put to beneficial use to the fullest extent of which they are capable.” In other words, water must go to its “highest, best use.” That is often ag. But ag exists in a world of competing interests. This attempt by them to rig the game is so typical. Big Ag, ever contriving.

A constitutional amendment prioritizing irrigation over environment would be a death warrant for the Delta, too. If this odious measure makes the ballot, vote early and often against it.
