The fourth option

Police Chief Eric Jones swearing in new recruits.

I thought I laid out the only three possible policy options to address the Stockton Police Department’s vexing problem with departing officers. But Dean Andal called with a fourth.

“The ¬†money could be used to contract with the Sheriff’s Department to contract with deputy sheriffs to provide patrol services,” Andal said.

Quite true. Unspent Measure A money could be used to hire deputies to patrol the streets of Stockton. That keeps the Measure A promise to voters.

“In the situation we have it’s probably a win-win scenario,” Andal said.

There might be political resistance from the Stockton Police Officers Association, the police union. But the way Andal envisions it, the deputies would be replaced with police as the PD manages to hire them. So the union wouldn’t lose any business.

There are issues beyond the political. Foremost among them is who picks up the pensions costs. Still, it’s an idea worth considering.
