A death knell for the tunnels?

Lois Wolk’s “tunnel-neutral” water bond, SB 848, narrowly failed in the Senate yesterday. But lawmakers have clearly switched tracks from tunnel-oriented water solutions.

Wolk’s $10.5 billion bond wasn’t much smaller than the porky $11.1 billion bond Gov. Brown has been afraid for five years to place on the ballot, lest voters reject it. Its size may have cost it Republican support, which is needed since corruption cases cost Dems their supermajority.

But if that bond amount were whittled down … “It’s not a loss,” said Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg. “It’s the beginning … of successful negotiations.”

It’s too soon to write the tunnels off. But I’d buy the pencil and stationery.
