Gary Hickey: Not funny anymore

Sure, it’s funny in a way that the man running to be San Joaquin County’s District Attorney, Gary Hickey, appears to be prone to bar fights and domestic squabbles.

Hickey was arrested twice over the weekend, the latter time after a woman who lives in his home accused him of assault. This is great material for case-hardened observers like retired editorialist Eric Grunder, who tweeted, “Nothing like knowing the system from the inside out.”

But the truth is Hickey is spiraling. Almost certainly alcohol is laying him low. His delusional aspiration to be District Attorney may add a layer of hilarious bathos, but the fact is the man is destroying his life. He needs help. His family members, friends or legal colleagues need to try an intervention — try, because an alcoholic has to want to change. But people who care about him should try.

Otherwise his incidents are going to pile up until he really hurts somebody. Or himself. Hickey is an accident in the making. Now is the time to help him.
