When the hacker booked a hooker

Here’s an excerpt from the Ch. 10 interview about my family’s extraordinary hacker troubles.

An episode of that story that I left on the cutting room floor was about the time the hacker sent an escort to my son’s house when my son was home alone.

By the time the hacker perpetrated this hoax, Stockton police had IDed him as a suspect and were monitoring his Twitter feed. A detective in the High-Tech Crimes Unit saw him tweet a boast of booking an escort and sending her to the house. A detective called to warn me.

I rushed to the house, arriving just as the escort was coming down the block on foot, reading house addresses uncertainly.

I rolled down my window and said, “Miss, are you looking for — ” and I gave the home’s address.

She said, “Pull over here.” I pulled over.

She came to the window. She said that address was indeed her destination.

I said something like, “Miss, that call (though it may have been an online booking) was a hoax. We’re being pranked by an Internet hacker. So if you or any of your —” I chose my words carefully “— associates receive any more bookings fromm this address, disregard them, because they are fake.”

The woman understood. She went away.

There’s frat-boy humor in this episode – I thought of saying, “But come back when my son turns 18″ — until you realize what it means that she was on foot. It means that her pimp probably dropped her off and picked her up.

What if, reaching the door, she had decided my son was dissing her and called in her pimp to straighten it out? Pimps are violent.

The malevolent little twerp who perpetrated this hoax probably doesn’t know enough about life to know how his prank could have gone badly wrong. But I do. It made me mad.
