Hickey: campaign or demolition derby?

I’m just going to go with the carefully worded news story lede:

“LODI – Gary Hickey, who is running for county district attorney, was involved in a physical brawl Tuesday night that ended with his opponent dislocating his hip, according to Lodi police.”

So, let’s recap.

—Hickey made headlines for a hit and run. After smashing his car into a telephone pole, he says he had to leave the scene and go home to sleep off a concussion.

—Hickey was  arrested on suspicion of drunken driving April 12. Charges are reportedly pending.

—Hickey made news for missing court cases.

—Ditto when a robbery defendant’s conviction is overturned because of “ineffective assistance of counsel.” In the motion the defendant states he thinks Hickey showed up to court inebriated.

—A TV newsman spots him coming out of a dive bar at 10:30 a.m.

—Now this.

Hickey would be easy to mock. His behavior is consistent with that of a raging alcoholic. But my gut tells me there may be some tragedy in his background that is causing him to act this way.

What I will say is that often 50 percent of the candidates that run for office in Stockton are preposterously unfit. Given two people are running for District Attorney, Hickey is doing nothing to alter this ratio.
