If you find yourself grumbling about the red ink flowing out of Stockton’s waterfront arena, take heart: other cities go way further overboard in their irrational quest to build arenas and land sports teams.
Case in point; El Paso, where the city demolished its City Hall (!) to make way for a stadium for its new triple-A baseball team, the Chihuahuas.
This article also mentions Reno’s fiasco, where the city built an $86 million stadium for the Reno Aces. Though the stadium is a perpetual money-loser, the billionaire owner is demanding another $1 million a year.
That stadium was the brainchild of Mark Lewis, the Stockton city manager 2001-06 who ignored expert consultants and overbuilt Stockton’s arena. He went to Reno after he was fired in Stockton.
