The champagne brunch report

It’s been a while since reader Pete Paulsen, a devout champagne brunch lover, called all fizzy to report and comment on a new champagne brunch.

Paulsen called to bubble over a Manteca restaurant, Ernie’s. The chef at Ernies is Michael Midgley, famous for his appearrances on the reality show “Top Chef.”

“Very elegant,” Paulsen said. “Very high priced, but they offer a Saturday brunch. They had eggs Benedict. It comes with mimosas. I said “What is I have the mimosa without the orange juice—just the champagne. The gal said no probem. Pat (his wife) ordered the omlets. Service was great. They gave us warm rolls, and everthing.

“The eggs Benedict – the best I’ve ever had in my whole life. And I’ve been to some of the best restaurants. They call this ham the Pork Belly Benedict. This thing was probably a good 1/4 to 3/8 piece of ham in there. Just unreal. The chef came out and introduced himself.

I asked Paulsen if he had only one glass of champagne. Ha. ”Oh, no. I I think I had four or five.”

The eggs Benedict was $18. But beware: prices at Ernies rise to such stratospheric heights as a $95 steak and lobster, Paulsen said. Still, ”Service was good, place was impeccable, décor very tasteful,” Paulsen said.
