A Fresno farmer takes the hater prize by comparing high-speed rail to the Holocaust.
Kings County farmer John Tos, who is suing to stop high-speed rail, told The California High-Speed Rail Authority, “It reminds me of Hitler in the 1930s when he set out to annihilate the Jews and take over the world. That’s what you folks are doing to the San Joaquin Valley. You’re going to annihilate, you’re going to destroy …”
He got that far before the board chair — rightfully — told him to put a sock in it.
The whole story here.
Valley farmers have legitimate property rights issues. Far be it from me to ever become the champion of eminent domain. But some also have a problem with modernity. They bristle when reminded that their conservative regions lies within a progressive state. Those who can’t distinguish between the legitimate exercise of state power and capital-E Evil only reinforce the need for state authority. A state sometimes must discomfit a minority that expects time to stand still.
