Letter of the day

Michael Lamm writes:

“Enjoyed your piece on Stockton Typewriter. Haven’t thought of them in years, although there were times when they saved my life.

“Before I went to my first computer in 1977 (an IBM Displaywriter, which cost me $11,000 at the time – about $41,000 in today’s dollars), I used my trusty 1937 Royal KMH standard typewriter to eke out a living. It served me daily from late 1965 through 1977.

“I still have the old Royal and, despite the poundings of two grandchildren, it still works fine.

“An interesting sidelight: My typewriter has a little aluminum tag on the side that claims it’s the property of the New York Times. Maybe it was.”
