A recent Fitz’s Stockton about a sandwich included the throwaway line, ”The sandwich may not delight a modern nutritionist. But so? What fun are modern nutritionists?”
This — naturally, inevitably — brought a protest from a nutritionist. Julie Grunsky says she is fun.
” … I just couldn’t pass up a chance to speak up for “modern nutritionists” and assure your readers that we’re not all about bland food, boring diets, and guilt-mongering,” Grunsky wrote. “Well, I would like to share “what fun” I think I can be! Here are some examples:”
— “At under 5 feet in height, I do have to be careful what I eat on a regular basis but I (very enthusiastically) do plan occasional splurges. Usually, that means … cheese puffs, various local bakeries, etc … my yearly trips to Apple Hill (… boxes and boxes of pies, donuts, fritters, turnovers, cakes, and other apple-based desserts), my birthdays … ethnic dinners in San Francisco (Indian is a favorite), etc.
— “Also at work: I keep a drawer in my office stocked with individually-wrapped candy …
— “Many people are surprised to learn that my daily lunch is almost always frozen yogurt. And a sizeable one at that. This seems to keep me from craving other frozen confections and has not created any problems “nutritionally”… And I consider it lots of “fun” to dig into chocolate, peanut butter, cheesecake, cake batter, and/or red velvet cake …
OK, stop. Eating yogurt is not fun. It’s eating yougurt. OK, proceed …
— “I LOVE to read about food. I “consume” SF Chronicle food sections as well as the Record’s, magazines … I check out intriguing web sites now and then!
— I adore watching some of the Food Channel stuff.
“So… that’s me. And maybe it’s not exactly up there with the “barrel of monkeys,” but the point is I like to think of my profession as knowing what you CAN eat and how it CAN fit into your life.
“By the way, I think it’s great that the iconic Orlie’s sandwich is being resurrected.”
