The principal of Bear Creek High School, Principal Shirley McNichols, illegally censored a story in the school paper that raised valid questions about the school safety policy.
The story, ”Outdated safety plan leaves some wondering: exactly how safe is BC?” is could make students “falsely believe the campus is unsafe,” McNichols contended. That, in turn, “could cause some student panic and affect students’ ability to learn.”
Setting aside how condesceding this is to students – they are poor little panic prone chickens, so the information they get must be managed — this censorship smacks of self-serving CYA. As usual.
The article makes it clear that Bear Creek’s jornalism advisors and student journalists stand up againt censorshop from petty tyrant principals, like the doofus who kept losing the school keys at great cost. Bravo!
