A river of baloney

The U.S. Supreme court has ruled that landowners may deserve compensation for any flood caused by Uncle Sam. This case was closely watched by farmers upset by the San Joaquin River restoration.

If, as the result of the restoration, floods damage crops, farmers deserve compensation, they argued.

I have the deepest respect for farmers, but certain contraditions in their mentality never cease to amaze me. Conservatives, they profess to hate big government. They champion individual responsibility. For the most part, they embody it admirably.

But when they choose to live next to a river they cease to be responsible for getting wet. They want government compensation. From a government that dammed and destroyed the San Joaqin River for their benefit. A government that subsidizes their water and crops. A government whose dam prevents them from being devastated by more frequent and catastrophic floods.

Go figure.
