Stockton is famously struggling. But the Port of Stockton is booming.
A decade ago Sen.Dianne Feinstein authored legislation directing the U.S. Navy, which had closed its Stockton base, to give Rough ‘n’ Ready Island to the port. This bonanza of 1,400 acres gave the port room to grow.
“At the time our revenues were $10 milliona year,” said Port Director Rick Aschieris. “Now they’re four times that. Fiscal year 2011-12 closed at $490 million.” And, “This is just the Port Authority,” Aschieris added, “not all the private businesses that are investing.”

“The greatness is we actually have room to expand, an advantage many ports don’t have,” Aschieris said. “Particularly the coastal ports. They’re built out.”
