City government leaders should have it; public employee unions often do. Visalia’s police are trying to take over. To further enrich themselves, of course.
The situation is analagous here. Stockton’s police and fire union have sued to undo the Council’s declaration of fiscal emergency, which allowed City Hall to make cuts needed ot avert bankruptcy. The suit is on pause. Possibly Fire reckoned if they won in court before the election, they’d lose Measure H (they did anyway); police may have stayed the suit while negotiating in good faith. But there it sits, a suit that could devstate Stockton fiscallly, like a gun resting on the table.
The common denominator is that control by city leaders — representing the public interests — does not suit the unions. The recession has been a painful process of reminding them they work for us.
