Reader decrys Goehring’s weird stump speech

Reader Jay Hislop adds to the column about District 11 congressional candidate Brad Goehring:   Brad Goehring spoke to my rotary Club (N. SCK) last week. If he gets elected, we deserve what we get. You need to hear him do his stump speech sometime.   He declares himself a “Conservative” and says “All my votes will be [...]

Public servants serving themselves

After reading today’s column, reader Tony Stevens sends these graphs, which show that “Median public sector pay long ago left median private sector pay in the dust.” Steven’s comment:: “I think I chose the wrong line of work.”

An old-school public servant

Michael Ball, a social worker with San Joaquin County, writes:   Thanks for the article today.  Public service is just that.  I came here because I wanted to give back to society, not extract from it.  Many of the folks I work with have the same ideals, some don’t.  Fundamentally, I believe, our county is [...]

Bill Yee interrupts our nature moment

Reader Randy Berkman spotted Canada geese around Micke Grove Park. Enamored, he sent this photo,. apparently believing he had enjoyed a rare encounter with Nature’s awesome aviators as they touched down midway along some marathon migration. To see if that was the case, I called David Yee, the area’s top birder. “They’re a pest,” Yee snorted. “They have become semi-domestic. They’ve [...]

Spelling "drat" isn’t rocket science

He misspells “drat” in his tweet. Jose Hernandez spelled it “drats.” “It’s either ‘drat’ or ‘rats’,” objects one reader. “He obviously hasn’t read many comic books.” Young Hernandez was probably devouring a tome on particle physics. Or perhaps, as one newsroom wit suggested, he intended more than one drat, so expressed it in the plural, like “Curses!” Or maybe [...]

L.A.’s top water dog promises not to bite us

“Southern California doesn’t seek more water from the delta.” – And if you believe that, I’ve got an opinion piece for you in the Los Angeles Times by the head of the Metropolitan Water District.  I dismiss assurances that a peripheral canal won’t take more water with a modicum of reluctance. But I dismiss them. No dam or canal [...]

‘We’re staying right here’

Rumors are flying around that Santiago Cocina Mexicana, a fixture in Lincoln Center since 1968, has lost its lease due to some cruel deal and has to move. False, says owner Santiago Maciel. “We’re not moving. We’re staying right here.”  Another falsehood debunked. Next rumor?
