Delta Queen crew sends SOS

The Delta Queen’s crew has produced a YouTube video asking Congress to continue the made-in-Stockton vessel’s 40-year exemption from the Safety of Life at Sea Act. Congressman Steve Chabot (R-OH) and Senator George Voinovich (R-OH) have both introduced legislation to allow the boat to operate on the Mississippi and other rivers until 2018.

Paul Newman’s Stockton connection

Vince Perrin Writes:   “It would be a pity if The Record ran the story of (Paul) Newman’s passing without noting his time in Stockton. Luke (in “Cool Hand Luke”) is one of his iconic roles. A new remastered and cleaned-up print of the movie has just been issued in a special Collector’s Edition, which I watched [...]

The Inspector General’s report and Baxter Dunn

A federal investigation has concluded that numerous federal prosecutors were fired for political reasons, while then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez stood by and did nothing about it. Higher-ups in the U.S. Justice Department railroaded honest prosecutors because they were not going after Democrats in an election year — or because they were going after Republicans. This brings us back [...]

Putting the hack in hackberry

We conclude this week with a forehead-smacking incident. A Stockton city tree crew cut down two hackberry trees on Greely Way.   Reportedly the trees were diseased. Our objection is not, as you may guess, that the city should have taken better care of the trees and saved them.   No, the city was not responsible for the trees at [...]

One less growth advocate

A left-wing website writes at length about the fight over privatizing management of Stockton’s waterworks, retelling the victor’s now-accepted version of events: people power defeated then-Mayor Gary Podesto’s attempt to give a public asset to a private corporation. Been there, read that. The writer does add one interesting line. …private water operations make their biggest profits by expanding their service [...]

The signature-gatherer’s strange argument

One aspect of the General Plan settlement I do not understand is the provision in which the city indemnifies The Sierra Club against lawsuits.   In other words, if anybody sues The Sierra Club over the General Plan settlement (though in all liklihood such a suit will be against the city, too, and possibly also the Attorney [...]

New Stockton prison not in budget deal

Doug Wilhoit, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce, forwards a Sacramento Bee story about the new prison the state proposes to force on Stockton. It is not a part of the new budget deal.   AB 900 included a bargain with San Joaquin County: In exchange for making us the gulag capital of California, the state kicks down $80 million towards [...]

Fire the jokers, hire Forrest

I’ve got a use for Forrest White, CEO of the San Joaquin County Fair, who has announced his retirement: booking acts at the Arena and the Bob Hope Theatre. White is the only public official around here who showed the savvy to book good musical acts. I remember when he booked Sugar Ray (when Sugar [...]

Go ahead, laugh. I’m supporting Groucho.

Ben M. Rishwain writes, “Here’s the Debate on the General Plan, as I see it.” STOCKTON GENERAL PLAN FOR 2035 As seen by GPAT, Planning Commission and the decisive Stockton City Council As seen by Jerry “Moonbeam” Brown (running for Governor), Sierra Club and the decisive Stockton City Council THE DEBATE   I’m going to guess Mr. [...]
