Arr, “pirate ship” arrives in Stockton

Following my column on the Delta Elvis, a.k.a. Horace Lucido, Lucido’s equally remarkable business partner, Dan Catalano, arrived in Stockton with his pirate-style party sailboat, The Buccaneer. Flying the skull and crossbones, the 78-foot spectacle tied up at Village West’s Marina’s guest dock beside Lucido’s yacht. The Buccaneer is the second component in the two entrepreneur’s [...]

Thanks, Tony

Thanks to my talented colleague Tony Sauro this blog stayed interesting during my vacation. I personally liked his last entry about today’s anniversary of the Fleetwood Mac riot–though, as someone who was there and got tear-gassed, I can attest it was a riot in the style of the 1968 Chicago Democratic Convention, with police going totally cowboy.

The day the music got gassed in Stockton

Blogger’s note: Guest blogger Tony Sauro is filling in while Michael Fitzgerald is on vacation. It was 35 years ago today that Fleetwood Mac came to play in Stockton. It also was the infamous day Stockton police tear-gassed some of the crowd during what was characterized as a “riot” at Billy Hebert Field. This wasn’t the platinum-selling Lindsey [...]

Completing the list for Jackson Browne

Blogger’s note: Guest blogger Tony Sauro is filling in while Michael Fitzgerald is on vacation. There’s  rarely enough available space to mention every song that’s sung when reviewing a music concert in a daily newspaper. Just like you can’t describe every pass a quarterback throws or every shot a basketball player takes in a game. Several e-mailers, though, [...]

Getting shut out of the radio games

Blogger’s note: Guest blogger Tony Sauro is filling in while Michael Fitzgerald is on vacation. While Mike Fitzgerald isn’t known for any consuming — or even quasi-consuming — interest in sports, a lot of folks in San Joaquin County are. Listening to radio broadcasts of some Major League Baseball teams and National Hockey League games while you’re [...]

Deep-fried delights in Stockton-on-Calaveras

Blogger’s note: Guest blogger Tony Sauro is filling in while Michael Fitzgerald is on vacation. As Mike helpfully pointed out last Friday, Stockton doesn’t have a global exclusive on the asparagus festival market. There’s one in quaint-sounding Bretforton, in the Vale of Evasham in England’s West Midlands. The city doesn’t have an exclusive on its name, either. There’s also [...]

Availing yourself of available knowledge

Blogger’s note: While I abscond to vacation April 22-28 this blog will feature guest blogger Tony Sauro. It would be easier to list the beats Tony hasn’t worked in his years at The Record. Suffice to say he’s a seasoned veteran and one of the best writers at the paper. Plus he’s a rock ‘n’ [...]

The Delta needs an angel

“It needs a steward. There is no steward—no body, no agency—whose sole purpose is to protect the Delta. And if I’m elected to the Senate, that’s what I’ll spend many years trying to accomplish.”–Assemblywoman Lois Wolk, who has some smart and realistic things to say about the Delta here.

Author unknown, but he’s writing about us

Don’t know who The Blue Parrot is, but anybody that writes about the giant orange on Highway 99 and the Enchanted Tiki Room in Disneyland–and throws in fortified Manteca wine–is welcome on this blog.
