Caring for the caregiver

Mary Nicholson, founder of Stockton-based Healings in Motion, wrote the following letter to promote this year’s Caregiver Symposium, an event she started several years ago in Stockton to help those who help others and recognize their valuable contributions to the community. She has also spearheaded the effort to push hospitals in San Joaquin County to become certified stroke centers, meeting national standards in stroke care. In this letter, she shares a little of her personal story that motivates her to carry on the work that she does. Thank you, Mary; you are a true hero for all the people of San Joaquin County.

I had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday yesterday.  For me, that gift is not taken for granted.
In the midst of experiencing the best time of my life as a proud parent, a respected career in broadcasting, a wonderful romance and newly rewedded,   I was suddenly devastated by a quick and sudden shift in my life.  My husband, at 47,  was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  In disbelief of this tragic news, I found myself deeply wounded, scared, in a new geographic location (San Joaquin County, CA) with a new name and suddenly serving as a Caregiver.  If that sudden journey wasn’t enough, as I was grieving my loss, I had a brain aneurysm, stroke, grand mal seizure and was challenged to regain many of the abilities I had taken for granted, including walking and talking.
I would not be here today to celebrate my birthday had it not been for my wonderful Caregivers at the hospitals and at home.  It took a team of people helping me in my recovery.  They did not give up on me.  I did not know how to express the depth of my thanks to my family, friends and my professional team of Caregivers.  Celebrating Caregivers is to recognize ALL Caregivers!  Caregivers play a vital role in care and recovery, yet are often taken for granted. That is why November 14, 2015 is proclaimed “Caregiver Appreciation Day” in San Joaquin County by the Board of Supervisors.

FREE registration has been available for the Caregiver Celebration since January. However, today is the last day for FREE registration.  It is a wonderful event to encourage self-love with massages, blood pressure, flu shots by Walgreen’s, stress relief to prevent burn-out,  engaging speakers, demonstrations, vendors, prizes and much more.

Sign up today!!!  All attendees must be registered!  After today, the ticket cost is $50.00.  Still a great value for this event.  To register go to
This year Healings in Motion is proud to be joined by the San Joaquin County Department of Aging Family Caregivers Services as presenters of this event.  Other sponsors include San Joaquin General Hospital, Health Plan of San Joaquin, South San Joaquin Irrigation District, Republic Services, River Islands/Dell’Oso Family Farms, Worknet, Nu-You Weight Management and other supporters hopefully coming forward to help make this day special for our community’s true warriors…Caregivers.
With complete thanks and gratitude,
