Fiscal accountability

That mysterious $58 million

Not blogged about last night: A discussion of $58 million (or $50 million, $56 million or $59 million, depending on who’s talking) in categorical money that literally has been going on for two years, since the waning days of the Jack McLaughlin-Paul Disario era, through the Tony Amato era and on to today and beyond. Two [...]

Public budget forums coming up this week

It’s been two weeks since Franklin and Stagg held forums on the budget at which the public could speak out about which people do not want cut and make cost-saving suggestions as SUSD tries to figure out how to slash a minimum of $20.1 million from its 2010-11 budget. Two more of the forums are set [...]

SUSD Live — 10:15 p.m. — 10:25 p.m.

They are on the final major item — the fiscal accountability plan. CSEA had hoped to pass such a plan months ago, but the board voted against it. Angel Picon, CSEA: “We are definitely in a very bad situation economically. We are hopeful with the steps the superintendent is taking that inclusion will be part of [...]

SUSD Live — 7:45 p.m.-8:09 p.m.

CFO Jason Willis says SUSD will have to cut $20.1 million from its 2010-11 budget. And that’s at a minimum. Interim Superintendent Steve Vaczovsky has also said midyear cuts are likely. The state is in a $14.5 billion hole for 2010-11, Willis said. The coming months will be occupied determining where cuts can come from. [...]

A closer look at Tuesday night’s SUSD agenda

The key item on the agenda is Item 10.2 — Fiscal Accountability Plan 3.0. The first version, proposed by CSEA back in May, was rejected by the board. The second item, proposed by Trustee Bill Ross two weeks ago, was tabled for modification. Tuesday, the board will decide whether to accept the latest version, which [...]

Fiscal accountability plan on SUSD agenda

The meeting notice (i.e. the bare bones) for Tuesday night’s board meeting is here. Among the items will be approval of an interim fill-in in human resources for Interim Superintendent Steve Vaczovsky, consideration of a policy governing how the board president is selected, and a revised fiscal accountability plan. Looks to me like a short meeting [...]

SUSD Live — 10:31 p.m.-10:47 p.m.

The board now is discussing Ross’ fiscal accountability proposal. Here, as outlined earlier, is what he’s proposing: ITEM 10.3: Ross has requested that the board pass his version of a “fiscal accountability plan.” The board rejected CSEA’s proposed fiscal accountability plan five months ago. Here’s what Ross is proposing: *A moratorium on new spending on implementation or expansion of any [...]

Blogging in the rain

As reported over the weekend, SUSD’s board tonight may replace Dan Castillo as president, mandate an annual rotation of the board presidency and eliminate the $50,000 threshold for the superintendent to hire non-instructional consultants without board knowledge. Here’s a link to the story. The agenda came too late to provide any additional details Friday. I intended [...]

SUSD Live — 10:02 p.m.

Dan Castillo during board member comments: “I believe there are a lot of good programs in place. Some have to be looked at. There’s an economic situation coming. We have to be planning now. It’s not going to be easy folks. We have a long way to go. We move forward with this district.” There will [...]

Interesting times

First of all, judging by the wild-fire rate that news seems to spread in SUSD, this is probably no news at all, but there is a blog that has recently gone up that is — um, how shall we say this? — a tad critical of the current direction of the district. The bloggers are choosing to remain [...]
