Trustee David Varela appears to be on an island in opposition to spending up to $100,000 to audit the police department. He called the contract spending “like a drunken sailor” to find out things the district already knows – that the department needs reforms.
Superintendent Steve Lowder said investigations such as this are common when leadership changes occur. Trustee Sal Ramirez said doing investigations the wrong way could lead to much higher costs. He said he know of an investigation that turned sour in another district and settlements ended up costing $700,000 or more.
