The board emerged from closed session at 6 p.m.
Sal Ramirez announced that the board has given Superintendent Steve Lowder the authority to choose an interim leader for the district’s police department. There are two undisclosed candidates. Chief Jim West retires this weekend. Lowder said a deal could come as soon as Friday.
In a sidelight, parent Thelma Gray, also an SUSD employee, spoke very briefly against any possibility Lt. Frank Gordo could be selected as West’s replacement, interim or otherwise. Gray has a pending lawsuit against the district and its police force. The trial is set for April in San Joaquin County Superior Court.
