As reported last week, Mick Founts has announced he will not seek a second term as superintendent of the San Joaquin County Office of Education. Two longtime educators, Gary Dei Rossi and Jeff Tilton, have announced they are running for the position.
The election is in June, and if it indeed ends up a two-person race (or, for that matter, if more people enter join the fray) it will be the first time the position has been contested since 1990.
Founts ran unopposed in 2010, and former Superintendent Rick Wentworth ran unopposed in 2006, 2002, 1998 and 1994. In 1990, four men ran for the position in the June primary. That necessitated a runoff election in November of that year, with Wentworth narrowly defeating Charles Humbert.
Before Wentworth, the position was held by an interim leader, John Bahnsen, who stepped in following the death of Gaylord Nelson in February 1990. At the time of his death, Nelson had been superintendent since 1963.
