From Stagg High journalism adviser Don Bott:
Four members of the Stagg Line newspaper staff participated in on-the-spot contests (writing/photography) at the 82nd annual San Joaquin Valley Scholastic Press Association conference. This area spans from Bakersfield in the south to Lodi in the north, many excellent schools/publications. In addition to on-the-spot contests, we submitted this year’s newspaper for critique as well as entries in 13 mail-in categories.
To jump to the big news, we walked away with the big sweepstakes trophy for the seventh time in the last 13 years.
Highlights:
*The newspaper received a perfect 100 on the critique – Every student in attendance placed in at least one on-the-spot contest: Jada Johnson (the only sophomore) took third in feature writing, Nicole Lawrence second in photography, Annamarie Cunningham first in editorial, and Adrianna Owens first in TWO categories: news and features.*In the 13 mail-in categories, where we were allowed only one entry per category, we placed first, second or third in all but one.
*First place mail-in winners, among current students, include the following: Annamarie Cunningham, Annamarie Rodriguez, Gabriella Miller, Brian Walker – Other winners (second/third) included Reanna Rodriguez, Damon Heine, and Jada Johnson.”
The next stop for the Stagg students will be next month’s national convention in San Francisco.
Winners Jada Johnson, Annamarie Cunningham, Nicole Lawrence, Adrianna Owens. Due to the shades, it’s impossible to tell if Cunningham is blinking, though she probably isn’t.
