$9.95-a-month Internet, $149.99 computers

I’ve blogged about this before, but it’s worth a reminder (and this is not intended as a free plug for Comcast, but credit where credit is due). During visits to schools, it’s inevitable to hear that many kids live in households that lack the resources to possess computers or to have Internet access.

A couple of years back, a Comcast representative came to an SUSD meeting to discuss the deal they have for kids who qualify for free or reduced meals: $9.95-a-month Internet access and the ability upon enrollment to purchase a computer for less than $150 — OK, one cent less than $150, but still …

Eighty-three percent of Stockton Unified students qualify for free or reduced meals.  In San Joaquin County, the figure is 61 percent.

Links to the Comcast offer are here, in English and Spanish. Hopefully this information will find its way to families whose kids can benefit.
