The day after dawns with bleary eyes, and one SUSD race remains tight. In Area 1 in south Stockton, incumbent Gloria Allen holds a 40-vote lead over challenger Monica Hernandez with 100 percent of the vote counted (sort of).
We will be in touch with the San Joaquin County Registrar of Voters today to see whether there is any chance that uncounted absentee and provisional ballots could yet change this outcome, and also whether there might be a recount.
Allen-Hernandez does evoke some memories of four years ago in Area 3, when Jose Morales beat incumbent Anthony Silva by one single, solitary vote. In 2008, Election Day was Nov. 4 and the Registrar did not certify Morales’ victory until Nov. 25. At that point, Silva called for a recount, and it was 13 more days, on Dec. 8, before Silva finally conceded. (Incidentally, I would guess the retelling of this saga might not bother Silva as much today as it would have 24 hours ago).
Anyway, it will be interesting to see whether the tight Allen-Hernandez race follows a similar course. Time will tell.
