SUSD’s board held a 15-minute closed-session meeting this afternoon. When it was over, Vice President Gloria Allen announced that Steve Lowder will start as superintendent Monday rather than on July 1, when his contract was to start. Carl Toliver, meanwhile, has left the building.
The vote to bring Lowder on early was 5-2. The no votes: Jose Morales and David Varela. Both questioned paying Lowder to work for an extra two weeks. “The district’s not in crisis,” Varela said. “We have a competent staff that can run it for two weeks.”
As reported today, Lowder’s early start could cost the district about $10,000.
