Victimization

The recent shooting of a 1-year-old boy near California and Park streets came up during a discussion Friday at a retreat for City Council members and city department heads.

To explain his claim that violent crime affects few people, most of them contributing directly to the circumstances that led to their victimization, Police Chief Blair Ulring said the child’s parents may have been at the corner of Cal/Park to buy drugs.

Later, Ulring said he didn’t know for certain that the boy’s parents were buying drugs, but the circumstances were suspicious and the story they told police had many holes.

Why were they there? To buy water for the baby at Cal Park Liquors, they said. But they live on Salters Drive, north of Hammer Lane, and would have had to bypass, at least, the S-mart at Kelley and Hammer. And that’s if they took the freeway.

“There’s more to this story than what we’re being told,” Ulring said.

Disclosure: I didn’t attend the retreat, but I had the place bugged.
