No Chase Rules

A friend brought to my attention today the story of a small town South Carolina mayor who has ordered her police department not to chase anyone anymore. A story by local CBS affiliate WSPA leads thus:

“The Mayor of Wellford is defending her policy which bans police officers in that city from chasing suspects. Sallie Peake says the policy also includes vehicle chases along with pursuits on foot.”

Now, a legitimate argument could be made that high-speed vehicle chases are rarely in the interest of…WAITAMINUTE FOOT CHASES WHAT IN THE CRAZYTOWN IS GOING ON HERE?!

According to the Associated Press, a memo from Mayor Peake was faxed to WSPA’s newsroom. In the memo, Peake ordered, “As of this date, there are to be no more foot chases when a suspect runs. I do not want anyone chasing after any
suspects whatsoever.”

She clarified that order in the following exchange with TV newsman Chris Cato:

Peake said the city was spending too much on worker compensation claims.

If a similar order is everĀ  issued in Stockton, I trust, hope, beg that someone would let me know.
