Trying to make Stockton friendlier for bicyclists

The city adopted its current Bicycle Master Plan in 2007, but Stockton could be much friendlier to cyclists, says Kristine Williams, executive director of the San Joaquin Bike Coalition. Bike parking is seriously deficient, Williams says, and some of the main bicycle routes in Stockton are unsafe.

Williams rides her bicycle to her Stockton job, but that puts her in a tiny minority of commuters in the city, even though many people live just a few minutes from where they work. Making Stockton a friendlier place for bicycles would make the city (particularly downtown) more vibrant and would be good for the environment, Williams said.

The San Joaquin Bike Coalition is welcoming new members. More information on joining up is available by email, or by visiting the group’s website or Facebook page.
