Parking meters going modern

You can bet that Cool Hand Luke is turning over in his grave.

The city announced this week that downtown parking meters will be upgraded to digital technology, and drivers seeking street-side parking spaces will pay for it.

The new meters starting to be installed in January will cost $1 an hour. That’s a jump from 25 and 50 cents an hour.

The problem is, the city says, that it can’t find parts to repair the old meters, so its going with the latest in parking meter technology. They’ll look the same because they’ll be changing out the inside parts, leaving the old posts and casing.

The city tried to soften the blow. The downtown parking garages give you a free first half hour, and a lot of businesses validate.

You’ll recall of course that Cool Hand Luke was shot in Stockton.
