Feds sued over medical marijuana crackdown

Americans for Safe Access, a marijuana advocacy group, today sued the Obama administration, trying to stop a recent crackdown on dispensaries. Here’s the announcement and here’s the 17-page suit, that says a federal prosecutor has gone so far as to target newspapers, which carry adds for dispensaries. The suit overall takes aim at SWAT raids of storefront operations and federal prosecution, which together upend California communities, like Stockton, which have made local ordinances to provide cannabis to patients. The feds’ MO has been to send letters to the owners of buildings that house the dispensaries.

The recent raids already scared Stockton’s first legit dispensary, Port City Health and Wellness, into closing its own doors temporarily to wait and see where the dust settles. Medical marijuana is expected to become a local debate again Nov. 10, when Stockton’s Planning Commission will consider a permit for a dispensary asking to open not too far from Chavez High School.
