Niblock honored

The City Council last night honored Mike Niblock, the city’s top planning and building official who is retiring after 36 years as a city employee.

Mayor Ann Johnston called Niblock one of the city’s finest employees and an adept problem-solver. “It takes someone who has infinite patience to deal with the issues that land in your lap,” she said before giving him a big hug.

Niblock praised his staff. “I think they do a fantastic job for this community,” he said. “It’s not an easy job being regulators. … It’s not a fun thing to do, but on the other hand, it’s very gratifying, because you see the results of your work over the years.”

After he received a plaque from Stockton’s local delegation of state lawmakers, Niblock said he is confident city leaders are steering the city in the right direction.

“The city’s in great hands,” he said. “I think good times are yet to come here. “
