Council district changes on the way (corrected)

Our story this weekend about all four Stockton City Council incumbents seeking re-election next year mentioned that council districts will need to be redrawn following the census.

Here is what the city has released so far in the redistricting process: census data that shows big population changes in every district, and growth in only two (Districts 1, in the north, and 6, in the south). The remaining four saw significant decreases, as you’ll see in the data. Five of the six districts saw different rates of population growth, and only one district – central Stockton’s District 5 – saw total population decrease between 2000 and 2010, according to the city’s demographer.

We’ll continue to follow this process and dig a little deeper into the numbers. In the meantime, the City Council will get a presentation Tuesday night on the next steps in redistricting.
