Scrutiny on costly contracts

The City Council tonight approved three expensive outside contracts tonight:

•Extending the contract of a human resources consultant for an additional $84,500

•Extending the contract of a consultant evaluating the city’s costly health care plan for an additional $192,500

•Hiring an outside lawyer (one of Vallejo’s bankruptcy lawyers) at $875 an hour

Marcie Bayne, executive director of the North Valley Labor Federation, criticized the contracts. “That’s a lot of money to add to the budget when you’re cutting workers,” she told council members.

Before the vote, Councilwoman Susan Eggman asked City Manager Bob Deis how long he expected the city to pay for these consultants. “Certainly nobody wants to have to pay these for very long,” she said.

Deis said “these contracts have already paid for themselves” because the consultants in recent months have identified potential savings to the city. “You look at that as an investment,” he said.

Councilman Dale Fritchen made a motion to approve the contracts with the condition that they come back to council for additional review by Sept. 1. The motion passed unanimously.
