Duran out

City Hall employees returned to work today after a long absence – minus Gus Duran, who for the past year temporarily filled the economic development director position, a key post that has experienced high turnover.

His contract, which expired Dec. 31, was not renewed.

Reached in Irvine today, Duran was asked if he was a candidate for the permanent position. He replied: “That was never really discussed. It was never offered and it was never talked about.”

Duran said he has an offer to work for the state, but he declined to provide specifics about the prospect.

City Manager Bob Deis said that potential job came up in a conversation between the two late last month. “So I said, ‘OK. Good luck,'” Deis said.

More to come in the paper tomorrow.
