Villapudua for Holman

Didn’t make it into last month’s story, but Carlos Villapudua, chairman of the county Board of Supervisors, told me at the time he was not officially supporting either candidate in the Elbert Holman-Xochitl Paderes race in City Council District 1.

“I decided to stay out of the race, period,” he said at the time.

The reason it even came up is because word had spread he was supporting Paderes. She had included him on a list of supporters in an e-mail invitation to a campaign fundraiser, and her website mentions him in connection with a certificate she received for participating in a leadership program (other participants received the same recognition).

Villapudua said he sent Paderes a letter asking her to not list him as an official supporter.

Fast-forward more than a week. Villapudua now is openly backing Holman, even walking precincts on the appointed incumbent’s behalf.

“I’ve always been impressed with Elbert,” Villapudua said Wednesday, noting that Holman did not seek his endorsement. “During these times, the City Council needs someone with experience.”
