From City Hall: Police up front (and sitting)

The two police officers who historically have stood guard at the back of chambers during City Council meetings are moving to the front, Deputy Police Chief Eric Jones said.

There are seats on either side of the dais, and Officers Sophia Juarez and Nicholas Barrera are now taking their seats.

The move is in response to an incident last year in which a woman came around the dais and put some paperwork on it.

Jones said “that prompted” the change but that “we actually had been looking, or should have gone to that some time ago.” He said the seat affords a “better view of the crowd.”

It also allows the officers to sit. There have been hours-long meetings in the past through which they have stood.
