Holman: Renison would have been formidable opponent

Dave Renison, who withdrew this morning from the campaign in City Council District 1, has not returned telephone calls for comment, and the reason for his dropping out remains unclear.

Incumbent Councilman Elbert Holman Jr. said this morning, “Why he is dropping out of the race, I don’t know, but he would have been a formidable opponent, I’m sure.”

Holman said, “I have nothing bad to say about Dave. He cares about his community. I think he was sincere in his attempt to run for the office.”

Candidates often come and go before the filing deadline, but Renison’s candidacy was more than a thought. Early in the contest, he had San Joaquin County Supervisor Steve Bestolarides’ endorsement (Bestolarides is the last person to win election in District 1), the help of Don Parsons, lawn signs and a Web site.
