Leaving the building

This afternoon, on the day of his retirement, City Manager Gordon Palmer stepped off the elevator in the basement of City Hall and walked out to his car with a box of belongings in his hands and his wife, Donna, beside him.

He kissed her, got in, and drove away.

On the Second Floor, dozens of employees had come to hug Palmer or to shake his hand. Some teared up when he left. “Well guys, we’re going to get out of here,” he said. “It’s all been wonderful.”
