The Ford committee

The composition of the ad-hoc committee appointed this evening to investigate the firing of Deputy City Manager Johnny Ford is more favorable for Ford than it could have been.

The committee chairman, Elbert Holman Jr., praised Ford publicly hours after he was fired July 14 and later urged Palmer to reconsider. Councilman Dale Fritchen, a member, also praised Ford after the firing. Councilwoman Diana Lowery, the third member, has been noncommittal.

Holman this evening promised a fair and objective investigation, and the retired chief District Attorney’s Office investigator has more than a little experience at that.

Initially Mayor Ann Johnston was to be chairwoman of the committee, which upset Ford’s camp. Johnston has declined to discuss details of the firing but previously has said, “Things were done appropriately, in my opinion.” She withdrew herself after Holman and Councilwoman Leslie Baranco Martin objected to her being on the committee.
