Severence forgone

One thing City Manager Gordon Palmer has never been is a drama queen. Councilwoman Leslie Baranco Martin said this afternoon of his retirement announcement, “Part of his frustration is you can’t get the work done for all the drama.”


Palmer, who is to retire Sept. 25, declined to address that.


However, he said, “I think it’s just time for me to end my time here.” He said, “Got a lot of good things done here, but now I’m pretty … it’s been a pretty rough year here with the budget and all those things trying to work our way through.”


Palmer’s base salary last year was $212,835. Had he been fired he would have been entitled by contract to a severance of more than $100,000, a payoff forgone by his retirement.


Palmer said, “I try to do a good job. I’m not trying to get fired from this place. I’ve worked hard here, and I’m proud of what we’ve done, and I’d just as soon leave with that being part of my remembrance.”
