Johnston preferred Anders at first, came around

Mayor Ann Johnston, who was on the panel interviewing candidates for police chief, said this afternoon that after a first interview she preferred San Jose Deputy Police Chief Donald K. Anders to Stockton’s Blair Ulring, whom City Manager Gordon Palmer appointed chief this afternoon. Johnston said that in the second round, on Friday, she came to prefer Ulring.

Anders did not show as well in the second interview as he had in the first, and Ulring did well, Johnston said. She declined to discuss what changed in the second interview from the first.

“It’s a good appointment,” Johnston said. “He’s demonstrated leadership already by doing a number of changes in the department. … I think that our Police Department will be in good hands.”
