More from City Hall: Meeting over, no appointment made

6:45 p.m.:

In council comments:

Councilman Elbert Holman Jr. is speaking on the Johnny Ford matter. He said, “Answers are needed. This segment of the community should not be left to fill in the gaps.” Holman said, “We cannot do anything about the decision that the city manager has made, but we can take a stand. We can comment.” He said the council can no longer say, “It’s a personnel matter” and be done with it. The council must address the matter, he said.

Councilwoman Diana Lowery said she supports doing an independent investigation into the Ford matter.

Vice Mayor Kathy Miller said, “A lot of people have gotten up and spoken and said this is more than a personnel issue and the public has a right to know.” She said, however, that the council is constrained by the legalities of the Ford matter. She said, “I think all of us are very committed to trying to make this as transparant” as possible but that employees are due a degree of privacy and that the council is obligated to protect that.

The meeting is over. An announcement on the appointment of a police chief had been expected early this week, and when City Manager Gordon Palmer has such an announcement to make he typically does it at a council meeting. He made no such announcement this evening, and the matter did not come up.

Goodnight.
