More from City Hall: DWSP bond sale approved, team building in August

7:25 p.m.:

The City Council voted 5-0 (Councilman Elbert Holman Jr. and Councilwoman Susan Eggman are absent) to approve the issuance of bonds not to exceed $260 million to finance the landmark Delta Water Supply Project. Vice Mayor Kathy Miller said she supposed Municipal Utilities Director Mark Madison, who is on vacation, is watching the meeting on TV.

7:35 p.m.:

The council is on to council comments, and Mayor Ann Johnston is talking about the city’s receipt of $7.9 million in federal aid over three years for police.

Johnston said she is setting up a “team building exercise” for the council in August.

Councilwoman Diana Lowery is addressing the Johnny Ford firing. She said “rumors and lack of facts create a very distrustful environment in the community.” Lowery said “a full investigation of the facts” ought to be had, and that those facts should be made available “to everyoone.” She joins Councilman Dale Fritchen in calling for that.

Councilwoman Leslie Baranco Martin said she has read the Ford letter. “The letter presents information and it postures the city for litigation, as I understand it from our city attorney. And there is an opportunity here for this council to discuss the facts in full.” That opportunity is pending litigation, which the council is allowed to discuss in private. Martin said the council should be able to “evaluate this case on its merits” in a closed session.

City Attorney Ren Nosky said the city has the legal basis to discuss the matter in closed session, if that is the will of the council. Mayor Ann Johnston said, “We’ll take that under advisement, then.”

Vice Mayor Kathy Miller is seconding Martin’s request for a closed session discussion. “I would definitely agree with council member Martin.”

Miller also said she is holding this week the first of four neighborhood meetings in her district to discuss neighborhood concerns and to get residents in touch with staffers they should know at City Hall.

7:48 p.m.:

The council is done talking. The meeting is adjourned. Goodnight.
