Cougars to stay put

The California Cougars are to remain at Stockton Arena for at least a year, the City Council likely Tuesday to formalize a one-year lease with the club.

The franchise was purchased by Cabernet Sports Entertainment of Livermore in April, and that outfit’s change of the team’s name from Stockton Cougars to California Cougars had suggested it might play elsewhere.

If the lease is approved, the team would pay rent of $4,000 per game and pay production costs.

Financially, the agreement is of little consequence. It is the hockey and football team leases that are bleeding City Hall.
